CHAOS IN CALIFORNIA

California voters are being asked to consider some new legislation this upcoming election regarding sex offenders. Better known as " Proposition 83, the sex offender punishment and control act". It is California’s version of Jessica’s Law, named after 9 year old Jessica Lunsford, a Florida girl who was murdered last year by alleged suspect John Couey. Mr. Couey has a lengthy criminal history as well as being a registered sex offender who failed to notify police of his whereabouts and wandered from place to place. He had no job and no residence.

Now, before people go jumping on the "Let’s stick it to these bastard sex offenders" boat, there are a few vitally important facts that need to be considered. First of all, this is a vividly clear example of "collective punishment" forbidden by the Geneva Convention. Therefore, it is illegal.

Most importantly however, is the over breadth of this law. It is all INCLUSIVE. The appeal that politicians are trying to sell this to voters on is in the very misguided belief that ALL sex offenders are child molesters and pedophiles who are obsessed with having sex with small children. This is simply NOT so. There are many individuals on there who were convicted for having consensual sex with someone 15,16, and 17 years old. Many of Whom are now happily married and have children of their own. How is this justifiable? For millenia this was the societal norm. My own mother was a minor, age 17, when she married my father who was 19. They are still together after 40 years, yet if they had gotten together in today’s climate my Dad would be a registered sex offender. There are probably hundreds of thousands of people out there just like my Mom and Dad but they were fortunate enough to grow up in a much better world than what we live in now.

The passage of this proposition means the "running off" of upwards of 70,000 American Citizens AND their families. Many of them will undoubtedly become homeless as a result of this. Ask yourself this; Will I feel safer if there are 70,000 homeless sex offenders wandering the streets at night?

Statistically the chances of your child being molested are 95% in favor of someone your child is related to or already knows. Not a stranger and NOT a registered sex offender.

Remember, these people are human beings, and as such we are pre-destined to make mistakes. You don't have to like them, love them, or even forgive them but they do deserve to be left alone once their sentence has been served as with any other type of crime.

The media repeatedly attempts to dehumanize these individuals by only reporting the most horrifying headline grabbing stories they can find which is a vastly different picture from that of a "typical" registered sex offender.

These laws all started with Megan’s Law. Which was "community notification" of sex offenders. If they don’t have a community to live in then how can the community be notified of their whereabouts?
